YARD RESIDENT DOOMSCROLL IS A SAFE HAVEN FOR PURE POPPYCOCK
22 November 2023
DOOMSCROLL is a safe haven for pure poppycock. It's a place where laughter, music, and performance merge into a wild and wacky experience. It's like a technological fever dream through the matrix while the circus is in town. High on energy, heavy on sweat.
A multidisciplinary queer collaboration, DOOMSCROLL is the supersized blend of IN BED WITH MY BROTHER (Dora Lynn, Kat Cory, and Nora Alexander), GLYSK (Anna Wheatley), Brain Rays, Quiet, Bopa Rhys, and Ben Welch. We talk to our new Yard Residents for 23/24 about what we can expect from their "super-live, super-ecstatic" party.
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO WITH YOUR TIME AT THE YARD?
We want to create a safe space to get silly. We want to dance to massive bangers and have massive laughs. We want DOOMSCROLL to feel like you’ve got 40 tabs open, and they’re all playing at once. We want to create a queer utopia where earnestness and head-bobbing to super cool Techno is out the window, where you’ve fallen tits-first into a meme, and it’s made you wanna properly dance. Our name is taken from being stuck in a deep, dark, depressing hole on the internet, but our nights will be anything but that!
High concept and high energy, we want everyone locked into a super-live, super-ecstatic, sweaty pit. We want to create something prioritising connection and absurdity in an increasingly bleak world that’s drained of fun, greyed out and bombarded with #ads. We can’t forget about the bleakness of the outside world, but we can laugh at it and cut through the shite with the silly.
We’re a big crew of artists from many different disciplines. We’re excited to get experimental with form and to have a space to throw fun new ideas and concepts out in front of a crowd and see what works. We want to experiment with what performance can be in a nightlife space –drag acts and gogos guaranteed, but maybe you’ll also be pelted with actual spam. Perhaps you’ll be live-sampled and thrown into the mix? Or, possibly, you won’t be able to tell which of your DJs are even real?
We try not to restrict ourselves to genres, but as a crew, we are fond of high BPMs and levels of silliness, so you can expect a lot of donk, jungle and pitched-up rave nonsense. We want to build a community of like-minded people who really get the vibe.
“WE CAN’T WAIT TO COMBINE NIGHTLIFE, COMEDY, DRAG AND PERFORMANCE INTO ONE BIG, STICKY LIL’ MESS.”
WHAT’S YOUR BACKGROUND IN EVENTS, AND HOW DID YOUR COLLECTIVE COME ABOUT?
DOOMSCROLL is a multidisciplinary queer utopia and supersized collaboration between IN BED WITH MY BROTHER (Dora Lynn, Kat Cory and Nora Alexander), GLYSK (Anna Wheatley), Brain Rays, Quiet, Bopa Rhys and Ben Welch. We’re a collaboration between mates: a sexy/messy/delicious venn diagram of artists, DJs, musicians, drag kweenz, singers, performers, music producers, writers, and dancers. After years of collaborative overlap in various contexts and combinations, we decided to unite and form DOOMSCROLL. We’re all massive fans of big noise, silliness and merging rave with performance, so we naturally gravitated together. We’re pumped to bring some performative, multi-disciplinary nonsense to the East London nightlife scene.
As a collective, we have an annual residency at Bangface Weekender at Southport Pontins. We take over BANGFACE TV with the Wrong Music crew and pump six hours of high BPM bangers and performative silliness into the festival’s chalet accommodation via the magic of live television. Our last show included a conceptual DJ set from DJ Corporate Sponsorship – a set repeatedly interrupted by adverts and a non-binary Lucius Malfoy…
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR YOUR NIGHTLIFE RESIDENCY AT THE YARD?
We’re excited to bring silly, unhinged stupidness to The Yard – a space that we love for not just its GR8 location but its merging of performance and rave. We want to experiment with different forms from other dimensions, including live stream, roaming cameras, projection and create a messy, multidisciplinary space. We can’t wait to combine nightlife, comedy, drag and performance into one big, sticky lil’ mess. And connect with cool new people and develop our audience in East London. We’re also keen to dance!
We’re not excited about big clean-ups after the rave of all the spam we’ve thrown around.
HOW DID YOUR FIRST NIGHT BRAND SLUT GO?
Brand Slut was a massive laugh. We couldn’t have asked for a more excellent combo of talent-drenched guests and enthusiastic silly-billy ravers. The crowd wore branded lewks to die for, and those who didn’t feel spangly or brandy enough went to artisan atelier Bopa Rhys to upgrade and upcycle. Rhys whiled away the hours on her sewing machine — attaching Coca-Cola logos to handmade jock straps and inventing the latest high street vogue: Tampax Denim.
IN BED WITH MY BROTHER took down the supermarket industrial complex with a very silly set climaxing with Nora putting a pound coin in her a**hole and spinning around butt-in-the-air in a shopping trolley to a donkkkky remix of that supermarket sweep song from the 90s.
DIS TOPIA shagged fifteen pairs of gorgeous shoes to an Azelia Banks soundtrack and a sea of aroused fans. Brain Rays brought the dancefloor to a rolling boil while endorsing his fave lemon & lime fizzy pop. THIRRRSTY spaffed out their debut live PA set of high BPM belters and chipmunk vocals, which had the crowd chanting the misheard but lols lyric “all day I dream about sausages”.
Yasmine brought the premium heaters and had the dancefloor popping off at peak time whilst Bopa Rhys and Lasagne Sheets worked the room. flemhacker closed the night with a fierce and frantic set, which took us way over the edge, never to return.
Other highlights included
1. Lasagne Sheets exuding 90s supermodel essence and effortlessly chic-ing up the dancefloor.
2. DJ Corporate Sponsorship securing deals at 160 bpm.
3. DJ (Mandatory) Fag Break smoking out the club for a full 5 mins. Ravers gazed and chinwagged as Bopa Rhys showcased their new cigarette packet lewk in the smoking area.
4. Slagger Jagger united the room in a DOOMSCROLL unofficial national anthem with her power-belted rendition of Cher Lloyd’s Swagger Jagger.
